Bird watching in New Zealand can be your own adventure along trails into native bush, or by organized tour to such places as Tiritiri Matangi Island Sanctuary off the coast of Auckland, Karori Wildlife Sanctuary near Wellington and Kapiti Island off the Kapiti Coast. Gannet colonies can be found at Muriwai Beach west of Auckland and Cape Kidnappers east of Napier. Visit the New Zealand Royal Albatross breeding colony and yellow-eyed penguins on the Otago Peninsula. Recovery programs for endangered species such as the Takahe enclosure at Te Anau and the Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre (north of the Wairarapa) are also open to visitors.

Cycle all or part of the Otago Rail Trail that runs from Clyde (near Queenstown) to Middlemarch, kayak in the Abel Tasman National Park or Coromandel Peninsula. Thrillseekers can bungy jump, skydive, and jetboat from Queenstown, go underworld rafting near Greymouth and abseil into the caverns near Waitomo.
