DIRECTIONS TO THE COTTAGE
HOONHAY VALLEY LODGE
- 2 minutes from Halswell Quarry Park
- 10 minutes from the Railway Station
- 15 minutes from the centre of Christchurch
- 20 minutes from the Christchurch International airport
Directions
Hoonhay
Valley Lodge is easy to find and to get to from any direction.
We are on the south side of the city, directly at the foot of
the Port Hills. Cashmere Road is well known and generally follows
the foot of the Port Hills over a distance of nearly 10km. We
are at the “Halswell end” of Cashmere Road, at the
corner of Hoon Hay Valley at number 564.
If
you are coming from the NORTH::
(that is from Nelson, Picton, Blenheim, Kaikoura, or Hanmer
Springs)
After
the end of the motorway keep driving towards Christchurch through
the first set of traffic lights. At the second traffic lights
turn right into Johns Road, sign posted

Stay on this road for the next 15km (name changes from Johns
road to Russley Road to Masham Road and then to Carmen Road).
Shortly
after crossing a railway line you arrive at a mayor intersection
in Hornby (Hornby Shopping Centre on your right). At this point,
State Highway 1 turns off to the right. Take the middle lane
and go straight through
into 
After
just over 1km you come to a Roundabout.
Turn left into Halswell Junction Road
You are now driving towards the Port Hills.
Follow
Halswell Junction Road for about 6km until you get to Halswell
and the first traffic lights. Drive straight through into Sparks
Road 
At
the first Roundabout turn right into Hendersons Road

Just
before coming to the foot of the hills, after a sweeping left
hand corner turn right into
Cashmere Road
Hoonhay
Valley Lodge is a further 1.2km up Cashmere Road, on your right
just before the intersection with Hoon Hay Valley.
If you are coming from the WEST::
(that is from Fox or Franz Josef Glaciers, Hokitika
or Greymouth over Arthurs Pass)
As
you drive on State Highway 73 towards Christchurch, the last
locality you pass is Yaldhurst.
About
2.5km further along you come to the intersection with State
Highway 1 on a Roundabout. Turn right into Masham Road
Stay
on this road as it changes name from Masham Road to Carmen Road.
Shortly
after crossing a railway line (2.5km) you arrive at a mayor
intersection in Hornby (Hornby Shopping Centre on your right).
At this point, State Highway 1 turns of to the right. Take the
middle lane and go straight through
into
After
just over 1km you come to a Roundabout.
Turn left into Halswell Junction Road
You are now driving towards the Port Hills.
Follow
Halswell Junction Road for about 6km until you get to Halswell
and the first traffic lights. Drive straight through into Sparks
Road 
At
the first Roundabout turn right into Hendersons Road

If you are coming from the SOUTH::
(that is from Dunedin, Queenstown, Wanaka, Mount Cook, Tekapo)
As
you drive north towards Christchurch on State Highway the last
town before the city boundary is Templeton. In Templeton you
pass the “Christchurch Information Site” on your
left. Keep driving towards
About
2.5km past the “Information Site” you come to the
turn off to
Turn off into Halswell Junction Road. You are now driving towards
the Port Hills.
Follow
Halswell Junction Road for about 7km (straight through two major
Roundabouts) until you get to Halswell and the first traffic
lights. Drive straight through into Sparks Road
At
the first Roundabout turn right into Hendersons Road
Just
before coming to the foot of the hills, after a sweeping left
hand corner turn right into
Cashmere Road
Hoonhay
Valley Lodge is a further 1.2km up Cashmere Road, on your right
just before the intersection with Hoon Hay Valley.
If you are coming from the EAST::
(that is from Akaroa or Banks Peninsula)
Coming
from Akaroa on State Highway 75 towards Christchurch the last
town you pass through is Taitapu.
About
8km after Taitapu you come to Halswell and the first traffic
light controlled intersection. Turn right into Sparks Road

At
the first Roundabout turn right into Hendersons Road

Just
before coming to the foot of the hills, after a sweeping left
hand corner turn right into
Cashmere Road
Hoonhay
Valley Lodge is a further 1.2km up Cashmere Road, on your right
just before the intersection with Hoon Hay Valley.
If you are coming from the AIRPORT::
As
you drive away from the terminals go straight through the first
Roundabout towards Christchurch.
At
the second Roundabout turn right into Russley Road going south
Stay
on this road for the next 6km (name changes from Russley Road
to Masham Road and then to Carmen Road).

after crossing a railway line you arrive at a mayor intersection

just before the intersection with Hoon Hay Valley.
If you are coming from the CITY CENTRE::
Numerous
ways lead to Hoonhay Valley Lodge! The easiest (not necessarily
the very shortest) route takes the following way:
Take
Colombo Street towards the Port Hills

Colombo Street is the main road through the centre of the city
(Square) going north / south.
Follow
Colombo Street right to the end at the foot of the hills. Turn
right at the Roundabout into Cashmere Road towards

You
now stay on Cashmere Road following mainly the foot of the hills
and the “Heathcote River”
At
1.2km from that first Roundabout you pass “Princess Margaret
Hospital” on your left and at 3.1km the turn off to the
hill suburb of Westmorland. 300m further on, watch out for the
turnoff to the left into
Cashmere Road 
Note that the main traffic flow goes straight on into Hendersons
Road and away from Hoonhay Valley Lodge!
If
you have not missed the turn off you will arrive at Hoonhay
Valley Lodge after another 1.2km on your right just before the
intersection with Hoon Hay Valley.
