  Wineries of the Hawkes Bay & Gisborne

Whilst both located on the east coast of the North Island these two regions have quite separate identities in the wine world. 
Hawkes Bay is the birthplace of New Zealand wine production with the Mission Vineyard being founded by the Catholic Society of Mary in 1851 and Te Mata Estate being the oldest winery still in production.
The growing conditions favour the late maturing grape such as Cabernet Sauvingnon and Reisling but all varieties are well represented throughout the region and amongst the award winning labels.

The Gisborne region is best know for it's Chardonnays, but again, produces fine examples from most varieties.
