Located forty five minutes drive North of Christchurch , the region is now well established as producing excellent wines. It's proximity to Christchurch makes it a popular day trip from there perhaps taking in a vineyard lunch. Traveling north from the city, or south into it, will also take you through this region and offers the opportunity to sample the local delights in transit.  As with Marlborough the white varieties and Pinot Noir are dominant with a smattering of other reds including Cabernet/Merlot.
